At Brandesburton Primary School, the curriculum is designed to build upon children’s prior learning, provide firsthand learning experiences, allow the children to develop interpersonal skills, build resilience and become creative, critical thinkers. We offer an engaging and inspiring curriculum that encourages an independent, life-long love of learning, both in school and beyond the classroom. Most importantly, it also recognises the aspirations of all our children.
We have four core fundamental drivers, which are embedded through all areas of learning. These are:

Our curriculum keeps us connected as a community of individuals whilst also embraces the community in which the school is situated. Embedding the children’s understanding of Brandesburton, allows the children to recognise and celebrate local history, heritage, geographical and business links and enables them to take an active role in community events throughout the year.
We place strong emphasis on the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of all our pupils and our school community has identified a clear set of values that underpin expectations for behaviour for all members of our school community.
Every child is recognised as a unique individual – we celebrate and welcome differences. The ability to learn is underpinned by the teaching of basic skills, knowledge, concepts and values. We constantly provide enhancement opportunities to engage learning and believe that childhood should be a happy, investigative and enquiring time where there are no limits to curiosity and there is a thirst for new experiences and knowledge. We promote positive attitudes to learning and teach the values and skills for the children to achieve future success.
Children leave our school with a sense of belonging to a tightly knit community where they have the confidence and skills to make decisions, self-evaluate, make connections and become life-long learners.
Implementation
The curriculum has been developed to embed key skills and knowledge as stated in the National Curriculum. Through quality first teaching of knowledge, skills and vocabulary, across core and foundation subjects (including Prime and Specific areas in EYFS), all children will be challenged to be independent, compassionate, courageous and creative learners. From EYFS – Y6, the curriculum has been structured to allow children the time and opportunity to revisit and revise key skills and knowledge.
From EYFS to Key Stage 2 the core subjects are taught in straight year groups.
The long-term sequence for the foundation subjects is arranged into a two-year cycle, rather than by year group, due to mixed age classes.
Impact
Our children will have a confident set of skills, knowledge and values which can be used to forge a successful pathway in education and beyond their time in school. Effective learning characteristics include being curious, reflective, resilient and imaginative will drive teaching and learning.
