Vision / Ethos

Brandesburton Primary school was built as a community school in 1843 on behalf of the Lord Mayor and Aldermen of London. It is a beautiful grade 2 listed building, situated in lovely school grounds and is the oldest building still in use as a school in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

Everyone at Brandesburton Primary is immensely proud of our school and we take great pride in the ethos we uphold. The ‘team’ at Brandesburton does a wonderful job of ensuring that every child continues to be independent, confident and happy and in turn, the children make our school a very special place and a pleasure to work in.

At Brandesburton Primary School, our vision is simple but powerful: every child leaves us equipped with a "Tool Kit for Life." This tool kit is more than just a set of skills — it’s a foundation for success at secondary school and far beyond, preparing our pupils to thrive in the wider world as confident, compassionate, and capable individuals.

We believe that education is not only about academic achievement, but about developing the whole child. At the heart of our ethos are core life skills that underpin everything we do:

  • Resilience – the ability to bounce back and persevere through challenges.
  • Good communication – expressing thoughts clearly and listening with intent.
  • Respect – valuing ourselves, others, and the world around us.
  • Active listening – being fully present and responsive to others.
  • Teamwork – working collaboratively to achieve common goals.
  • Kindness – showing compassion in all we do.
  • Inclusion for all – embracing diversity and ensuring everyone feels they belong.
  • Independence – growing in confidence to think and act for ourselves.
  • Empathy – understanding and sharing the feelings of others.

These values and skills are not taught in isolation. They are woven into every part of our curriculum, our relationships, and our school culture. Whether in the classroom, on the playground, or beyond the school gates, the Tool Kit for Life guides how we learn, how we interact, and how we grow.

At Brandesburton, we nurture children not only to be ready for the next step in their education but to become lifelong learners and compassionate citizens. That’s our commitment — and our promise — to every child and every family.

Restorative Practice

We are a Restorative Practices school and encourage children to accept responsibility for their actions and the impact their actions have on others within the school and the wider community. We believe it is important to help children understand the role they have to play in their own learning and how they can help themselves make progress. We understand that this is not always easy and ensure that our learning community is one where we learn from our mistakes and feel confident to explore our ideas.

We believe these values are fundamental in supporting our children to succeed not only at school but in all areas of life.
