French

Intent

At Brandesburton Primary School, our French curriculum aims to foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. We want children to develop an appreciation of different languages and cultures, while building confidence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in French.

We aim for pupils to:

  • Develop confidence in communicating in a foreign language
  • Understand and respond to spoken and written French
  • Build a secure foundation of vocabulary and basic grammar
  • Appreciate and respect other cultures

Implementation

French is taught across Key Stage 2 through regular, structured lessons. The curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure progression in language knowledge and skills.

Our approach includes:

  • A focus on speaking and listening through repetition, songs, and conversation
  • Introduction and practice of key vocabulary and grammatical structures
  • Opportunities to read and write simple phrases and sentences
  • Revisiting and building on prior learning to support retention

Lessons are interactive and engaging, helping pupils to develop confidence and enthusiasm for language learning.

Impact

As a result of our French curriculum, pupils:

  • Develop confidence in speaking and understanding basic French
  • Can read and write simple words and sentences
  • Gain an awareness of different cultures and languages
  • Are well prepared for further language learning at Key Stage 3

Pupils leave Brandesburton Primary School with a positive attitude towards languages and the foundations needed to continue their learning.
