Religion and World View

Brandesburton Primary Curriculum

Intent: Religion and World View

 Intent

At Brandesburton Primary, it is our intent that through Religion and World Views children can explore their own values and develop spiritually, morally, socially and culturally.  Our curriculum is designed to allow children to learn about the key world religions and non-religious views. Children are encouraged to reflect on their own beliefs and what we can learn from others. At Brandesburton we do not have children from a diverse number of cultures or religions so we therefore feel it is vital that children across the school are introduced to and immersed in teaching and learning experiences that show a true representation of our country today and the wider world. We feel this will enable our children to be well equipped for secondary education and life beyond school.

Our aim is to help children know and refer to religious and non-religious beliefs and worldviews, practices and ways of life; to appreciate the way that religious beliefs shape life and our behaviour, develop the ability to make reasoned and informed judgements about religious and moral issues, understand the Modern British Values and enhance their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Religion and World Views has a holistic approach and is taught throughout the school in such a way as to reflect the overall aims, values, and philosophy of the school. It plays an important role and intertwines with many other curriculum areas, particularly Personal Development and PSHE, in promoting the understanding of Modern British Values and the spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development of our children.

It is vital that the Religion and World Views curriculum at Brandesburton equips our children well with key knowledge about other people’s beliefs, how they express them and how these beliefs and practices impact their lives in the following faiths; Christianity, Islam and Hinduism, as well as other religious and world views, in particular Humanism.

The focus for each unit is based around one of these four key concepts which are revisited throughout their RW journey from Year 1 to Year 6.

  1. Beliefs
  2. Culture & Identity
  3. Being Human
  4. Power & Authority

Looking at Religion and World Views through theology, philosophy and social sciences, we are enabling Brandesburton children to connect, reflect, evaluate and apply their knowledge as part of preparing them for life in diverse Britain. To support children’s deeper and broader understanding of Religion and World Views, our approach to teaching explores the substantive concepts through the following disciplinary concepts know as ‘lenses’.

Theology   2. Philosophy   3. Social Sciences

 Implementation

Religion and World Views is taught in accordance with the approved East Riding Agreed Syllabus. In Years 1 to 6 lessons are taught weekly to ensure that our pupils are building on and revisiting prior learning.

In EYFS children develop an awareness and respect for their own cultures and beliefs, and those of others. Through carefully planned learning experiences in a language rich environment, children are provided with the opportunity to develop and build their knowledge of the world around them. During their time in EYFS children explore and encounter a range of texts, people, artefacts and religious festivals and celebrations.

Pupils learn about and form religious and worldviews in local, national and global contexts, to discover, explore and consider different answers to these questions. They learn to weigh up the value of wisdom from different sources, to develop and express their insights in response, and to agree or disagree respectfully. Teaching equips pupils with systematic knowledge and understanding of a range of religions and worldviews, enabling them to develop their ideas, values and identities. It develops in pupils an aptitude for dialogue so that they can participate positively in our society with its diverse religions and worldviews. Pupils gain and deploy the skills needed to understand, interpret and evaluate texts, sources of wisdom and authority and other evidence.

Impact

All pupils in our school are educated to develop spiritually, academically, emotionally and morally to enable them to better understand themselves and others and to cope with the opportunities, challenges and responsibilities of living in a rapidly changing, multicultural world. Pupils will demonstrate strong foundations of skills and attitudes that enable them to participate fully in and contribute positively to life in modern Britain by making a positive contribution to society. Pupils respect people in the wider community, including their beliefs, traditions, culture, language and history.
